On the Set of a New Business Studies Resource - BizTalk

4th April 2013

A day away from the tutor2u office yesterday as we continued filming for a new joint venture between tutor2u and Business in Yorkshire (BiY). We've partnered with BiY to jointly develop BizTalk - a new online business channel that provides insights into the challenges faced by the entrepreneurs trying to manage and grow their small or medium-sized enterprises. The aim of the channel is twofold:(1) To provide straightforward, honest and clear advice to SME entrepreneurs about potential solutions to their business challenges, and(2) To allow students and teachers to gain real-life insights into the realities of business management and to connect with the entrepreneurs featured to support their study and teaching.BizTalk will launch on a dedicated website in early summer 2013 and the content will also be integrated into the tutor2u website supported by additional study and teaching materials based on the real-life businesses featured in each programme.

On set yesterday we were filming just one part of the channel's first programme. We had assembled a panel of business experts who discussed potential solutions to the challenges faced by the first two SMEs that will feature on BizTalk.

The context for programme one is how SME owners can get themselves in front of the right people in order to grow their customer base profitably. How can they release themselves from some of the common constraints that typically hold SMEs back when it comes to business development - particularly selling?

Last week we had visited the premises of the two SMEs - print management firm PMG and HRM outsourcing specialist HR180. We filmed the entrepreneurs concerned and they explained their key business issues. In a follow-up session, each entrepreneur met with a "peer group" panel of fellow SME owners who explored the issues raised in more detail - which led to a fascinating and honest discussion!

We'll let everyone know as soon the first BizTalk programme is live and the channel launched!

In the meantime, here are some snaps I grabbed during filming (I got to have just a small role as Channel Co-Founder!).

The panel is prepared for their first discussion..

The panel provided their expert guidance on the options open to each entrepreneur...

Presenter and former Hollyoaks Actress Victoria Pritchard completes the voice-overs!
