Apple – the biggest company ever?

Tom White

21st August 2012

Almost exactly a year ago we were asking if Apple was the world’s biggest company and 12 months later, perhaps it’s the biggest of all time.

If you follow the link to the previous blog, you can see that this is a question that deserves a considered response. It mainly hangs of your definition of ‘big’. For instance, the number of employees in a firm is often used to measure size. The table below shows some business organisations that make Apple seem ‘big’, rather than enormous!

The latest headlines have been prompted by the news that the market value of Apple’s shares have just hit approximately $623bn, beating Microsoft’s record of $621bn set in 1999.

You can still argue with the figures however - £620 billion was worth more in 1999 than 2012, as inflation has reduced that value of $1, so Apple perhaps have a good way to go before becoming the biggest ever business…
