Psychology In The News | The Science of Motivation

Recent neuroscience research reported in The Guardian suggests that what we often call ‘laziness’ may have biological origins. This supports the biological approach in psychology, which argues that behaviour is shaped by brain structures and neurochemical processes.

The basal ganglia, involved in initiating (beginning) behaviour, help link our needs to actions. When these structures are impaired, people struggle to start tasks independently, even though they remain physically able, showing that motivation can depend on neural functioning rather than personality. Dopamine also plays a central role. Rather than producing pleasure, it drives the ‘wanting’ that motivates us to pursue rewards. This aligns with research on the brain’s reward pathways, helping explain why some individuals find effortful tasks harder to engage with.

In one Oxford University experiment, university students chose whether to squeeze a handgrip at different effort levels for small monetary rewards (represented as apples). Here, effort was operationalised as a percentage of grip strength and reward as the number of apples. Motivated people decided quickly, while apathetic individuals hesitated—especially on borderline trials such as ‘six apples for 80% effort’. Their slower decisions suggest difficulty with effort–reward evaluation, leading them to default to ‘no’.

However, motivation is not purely biologically determined. Environmental and cognitive factors also contribute, reflecting an interactionist perspective. Interventions such as pre-planning tasks and regular aerobic exercise can support the dopamine system and reduce the mental load of decision-making. Understanding apathy as partly brain-based challenges the idea that unmotivated people simply lack willpower. Instead, it highlights how biological and environmental factors combine to shape behaviour.
