Psychology in the News | Should We Lie In?

If you're someone who drags yourself out of bed at 6:30 am on school days but happily sleeps until noon on Saturdays, you might have been told you need a more consistent sleep schedule. But here's some good news: newly published research suggests that catching up on sleep at weekends could be protecting your mental health.

US researchers examined the relationship between weekend ‘catch-up’ sleep and depression in young people aged 16-24. The study analysed data from thousands of teenagers and young adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (a USA self-report survey) between 2021 and 2023. The findings were that those who recovered lost sleep on weekends showed a 41% lower risk of depressive symptoms compared to those who remained sleep-deprived throughout the week.

This protective effect makes sense when you understand what's happening in your brain during adolescence. Your circadian rhythms naturally shift during your teenage years, transforming you from a morning person into a night owl. Sleep onset progressively delays until around age 18-20, making your natural sleep window approximately 11pm to 8am. This isn't laziness or poor habits; it's biology. The problem is that this natural rhythm clashes with early school start times, creating a ‘sleep debt’ throughout the week.

Sleep researchers have long recommended that adolescents get 8-10 hours of sleep at consistent times every night. While this remains the ideal goal, the researchers acknowledge it's often unrealistic. Many teenagers juggle academic demands, extracurricular activities, social commitments, and part-time jobs, making consistent sleep schedules nearly impossible to maintain. When you can't meet that target during the week, sleeping longer on weekends may help reduce your risk of developing depressive symptoms.

This research is particularly important because depression is a common issue among 16–24-year-olds, affecting daily functioning, including work attendance, punctuality, and the ability to keep up with responsibilities. Understanding modifiable risk factors like sleep patterns is crucial for developing interventions that work in the real world. So, while working toward better weekday sleep remains important, don't feel guilty about those weekend lie-ins. Your brain might need them!
