Oscar Pistorius, homicide and bail

Andy Howells

12th September 2014

Big news in that Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of culpable homicide, or manslaughter, today. Obviously great murder/manslaughter discussion material, but also fab for today's consideration of whether Pistorius should be granted bail, as the presumption in South Africa is the same as here. The Guardian, liveblogging events, details the South African government's arguments against Pistorius receiving bail as follows: Pistorius has now been convicted of “a very serious offence”.He has, during the course of the trial, sold three properties and now owns no property in South Africa.During the course of the trial, Pistorius was involved in an “incident” in a nightclub. His family made a statement to the press admitting he was “self-harming”.The mental health evaluation deemed him a potential suicide risk. The article also details the defence's response. Great stuff.
