Only 42% of prisons are safe

...according to this report from HM Inspectorate of Prisons, which adds to the problems facing prisons including an extremely concerning 69% increase in self-inflicted deaths. The percentage of prisons rated "good" or "reasonanbly good" for safety has fallen by 40% since 2011-12, which is very worrying and essential information for students considering the effectiveness or otherwise of prison as a sentencing option.
