A Primary Example of Bad Legislation

The Government has caused controversy by rushing its proposals for reform of care services through Parliament in a single day. Read on for video clips, podcast and worksheet!

Firstly, I showed my students the two videos below as an example of the consultation process and the impact that stakeholders will feel from legislation that may seem dry to students at first. We also looked at a very brief extract from the government’s Green Paper. You may also wish to show your students these comments from various stakeholders.

Then ask your students to listen to the Today Programme podcast below and complete the questions on the worksheet. This is quite a difficult exercise and the students may need two or three listens, but it is worth it to highlight the issues around Parliamentary Sovereignty and Separation of Powers raised by the Government rushing through the Bill prior to the election in this way.
