Carrying out aerobic respiration is the main role of the mitochondria (singular mitochondrion). Aerobic respiration is the chemical process that uses glucose (from food) and oxygen (from breathing) to release the chemical energy stored within glucose. Cells which have high energy demands, for example muscle and nerve cells, contain thousands of mitochondria.
