Platform Decay

Platform decay describes the predictable lifecycle of two-sided digital markets. Initially, tech firms heavily subsidize services to attract consumers and build network effects. Next, they lure in suppliers. Once both sides are locked in by high switching costs, the platform exploits its dual monopoly-monopsony power. It deliberately degrades the user experience and hikes supplier fees, extracting maximum economic rent.
