Spotify needs scale and a broader range of users - will a bid for the German-based business SoundCloud make good commercial sense in the increasingly contestable global market for digitally streamed music?

Spotify in talks to acquire SoundCloud

The major challenge for the digitally-disrupted (or is that digitally-enhanced?) music industry is to grow the installed user base and develop a product that enough people are willing to pay for through a subscription model. There are positive signs for the industry drawing on recent data from the USA.
