US dollar tumbles to four-year low as policy chaos and weak confidence hit global markets

The US dollar’s slide to its lowest point in four years reflects a cocktail of political noise, investor jitters and shifting capital flows that have eroded confidence in the greenback’s safe-haven status. Markets sold dollars after President Trump shrugged off depreciation and persistent tariff threats, while fears over Federal Reserve independence and fiscal imbalances further weighed on the currency. A weaker dollar can be a boon for US exporters by making American goods cheaper abroad and narrowing trade deficits, but it also makes imports pricier, risks higher inflation and could dampen foreign investment in dollar-denominated assets, with ripple effects across global trade and finance.
