Friday night’s fish and chips may vanish under strain from overfishing quotas

Rising concerns over collapsing fish stocks signal a classic ‘tragedy of the commons’ scenario: fishermen compete to overexploit a shared resource, pushing key species toward depletion. To prevent collapse, the government is being urged to impose catch quotas — an intervention to align private incentives with social optimum. But unless subsidies or transition support guard against government failure and unintended unemployment, stricter limits could raise fish prices and reduce supply, risking the very economic viability of Britain’s beloved fish-and-chips trade.

Why your Friday night fish and chips could be under threat | UK News | Sky News

1. Explain how overfishing represents an example of the tragedy of the commons in the fishing industry.

2. Analyse how the introduction of fishing quotas acts as a form of government intervention to correct market failure caused by overfishing.

3. Discuss whether government-imposed quotas are the most effective solution to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the fish and chip industry.
