Next overtakes M&S as competition heats up and demand shifts in fashion retail

In a striking turn of retail economics, Next has captured market share at the expense of Marks & Spencer by offering strong substitutes to M&S’s traditional line, boosting its revenue as consumer preferences evolve. Next’s sharper cost-control and inventory management have allowed it to respond to increased demand more efficiently, while M&S has lagged, facing weaker growth and excess supply, a circumstance accentuated by the April cyber-attack on M&S. With competition intensifying, Next’s strategic advantage has translated into greater profit margins and market dominance, leaving M&S scrambling to reposition in a fast-shifting landscape.
