Chart Analysis - 'Chart Headlines' Activity

12th April 2018
Here's an activity that you may like to try with your returning students to get them back into analysing charts and offering some evaluation.
Called 'Chart Headlines' it offers a newspaper template with a single chart (and its title). Students (either in pairs or individually) explain what is happening in the chart. They then offer some analysis (what could have caused the trend) and then 'Editor's Comments' (i.e. what the government should do about the trend).
This version of the resource offers 5 chart headlines:
- UK Output Gap
- UK productivity compared to other nations
- UK Government Debt
- Income per capita for EU countries
- UK average house prices
You could use this in a 'round table' exercise - i.e. get one group of students to write about the chart, hand it over to another group of students to write an analysis and then a further group of students to write an evaluation.
NOTE: This is an edited version of the activity that will be made available as part of our upcoming Wow Economics Teacher CPD event. The CPD version will include 20 charts and have an editable template to allow teachers to include their own charts.
