Britain’s Youth Brain Drain Explained I UK Economy News

Britain is experiencing a growing youth brain drain, with emigration of UK nationals rising to around 252,000 in the year to June 2025, and three-quarters of those leaving under the age of 35.

Key push factors include the housing asset trap, where rent absorbs 40–60% of young workers’ take-home pay, a rising stealth tax burden caused by frozen income tax thresholds, and a sense of “vibecession” — a gap between official economic data and lived experience.

The consequences are serious: a shrinking tax base, higher pressure on public services, and the loss of highly skilled, mobile workers such as doctors, engineers and creatives, threatening the UK’s long-run productivity and growth potential.
