Argentina imposes currency controls
4th September 2019
The Argentinian economic crisis continues, and the central bank has imposed currency controls to try and stop the further depreciation of the peso. The country remains in deep recession, and price inflation is running at over 20% for the first half of the year. Currency controls are an attempt to halt capital flight as nervous investors look to unload Argentinian pesos and move their assets into safe currencies including the US dollar. Argentinian central bank reserves of gold and foreign currencies have been dwindling at a rapid pace.
