We’re delighted to launch a brand-new Student Guide for the AAQ BTEC National in Early Childhood Development. This digital download offers a clear, accessible introduction to the course and its assessments and it is the perfect resource for helping learners get off to a confident start.

A closer look at the specification

The AAQ BTEC National in Early Childhood Development is made up of four mandatory units, making planning and delivery straightforward for teachers while giving students a focused, purposeful study programme.

Unit 1: Children’s Development Covers physical, cognitive, language, emotional, and social development from birth to age 8. This unit introduces key developmental theories and provides the foundation for later units. Assessment is exam-based, helping students build confidence in formal assessment early on.

Unit 2: Keeping Children Safe Focuses on safeguarding and child protection in early years settings. Students will develop an understanding of professional responsibilities, legislation, and procedures that keep children safe. Assessment is again exam-based, ensuring students gain practice in applying their knowledge under timed conditions.

Unit 3: Play and Learning Explores theories and types of play, curriculum approaches, and planning engaging, age-appropriate activities for children aged 0–8. This is where theory from Unit 1 comes to life through practical application. Assessment is via a Pearson Set Assignment.

Unit 4: Research and Reflective Practice Develops essential skills in research and reflection, including data collection methods, evaluating sources, and basic data analysis. A work placement can add real-world value, but it isn’t essential. Assessment is also via a Pearson Set Assignment.
