This activity on J D Wetherspoon provides price elasticity of demand and revenue calculations to assess how a proposed drink price increase could affect sales and income.

Students use illustrative Wetherspoon data to calculate the percentage change in a drink’s price and quantity demanded, before working out its price elasticity of demand. They classify demand as price elastic or price inelastic and calculate weekly revenue before and after the proposed price rise. The final task requires students to interpret the results and decide whether increasing the price is advisable, linking inelastic demand to the possibility of higher total revenue despite lower sales volume.
