What's the story?

Netflix's recent financial report reveals a strong performance, with the streaming giant significantly outperforming subscriber growth expectations.

The company added nearly 19 million new subscribers between October and December 2024, more than the forecast 9.6 million. Netflix now has over 300 million subscribers around the world.

Driven by popular content like the second season of Squid Game and diverse entertainment offerings including sports events such as the Jake Paul versus Mike Tyson boxing match, Netflix demonstrated its evolving content strategy.

The platform is expanding into live events, having streamed NFL games and securing broadcasting rights for future sporting events like WWE wrestling and the FIFA Women's World Cup.

Financial results were equally impressive. In the final three months of 2024, net profit doubled to $1.8 billion and sales revenue increased from $8.8 billion to $10.2 billion.

To capitalise on this growth, Netflix plans to raise subscription prices in select markets including the US, Canada, Argentina, and Portugal. In the US, the standard ad-free plan will increase to $17.99 from $15.49. The ad-supported membership will also rise, up one dollar to $7.99.
