Verstehen is the German for "to understand" but has come to mean a particular form of deep, emphatic understanding. Introduced to sociology by Max Weber, the term refers to seeing the world as others see it, to the sort of rich valid data that might be acquired through participant observations or extensive unstructured interviews.
