Internal factors refer to factors within the school that can influence a student’s achievement, in contrast with external factors such as material or cultural deprivation. These include teacher stereotypes and labelling, bias and discrimination, whether individual or institutional, and issues with the curriculum or with assessments. This bias or discrimination could relate to social class, ethnicity or gender for example.
