Individual discretion

There are several sociological explanations for the nature of police discretion (i.e. when the police choose whether or not to enforce the law in certain situations). Individual discretion, as opposed to cultural or structural discretion, means that individual police officers will use their personal discretion, which may be discriminatory, and may not necessarily reflect the police's occupational culture nor its structural role in society.
