In Marxist theory, ideology is a set of ideas about society that are used to justify a particular set of interests. The dominant ideology is the one that is most widely shared within society: the ideology advanced by the ruling class (or bourgeoisie). It is closely related to Antonio Gramsci's idea of hegemony.
