Surveillance Capitalism

Sarah Best

12th February 2020

In this short video from The Financial Times, the theme of surveillance capitalism is discussed.

Unlike the past where governments and media companies operated with a top-down model in their exertion of power and control, technology companies such as Google and Facebook operate from the bottom-up, where advertising can be designed for us individually through location services for example.

This video and a wider discussion could be used in The Media unit (new media) and Theory and Methods/Crime and Deviance (Foucault and the panopticon).
