Digital Gender Bias

Sarah Best

28th May 2019

Here is an interesting article that links media and gender in regards to digital assistants, such as Amazon's Alexa and Apple's Siri.

Research conducted by UNESCO claims that by giving digital assistants female voices, it reinforces the idea of women as subservient.

The writers of the research paper 'I'd blush if I could: closing gender divides in digital skills through education', found that many of the firms developing AI technology were staffed predominately by men and this may be one explanation for the use of feminine voices.
