A partial reinforcement schedule occurs when reinforcement occurs on some occasions and it has been found that behaviours acquired with partial reinforcement show a much slower extinction rate. In terms of gambling, people do not win every time, but the partial reinforcement of winning sometimes means that they know there is a chance they could win next time, which makes it difficult to stop.
