Sympathetic Nervous System

Part of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) – controls involuntary responses during stress or emergencies.

Function: prepares the body for action or intense activity.

Effects on the body:

  • Increases heart rate and force of contraction
  • Increases breathing rate and dilates airways
  • Redirects blood flow to skeletal muscles, heart, and brain
  • Stimulates glucose release for energy
  • Dilates pupils to let in more light
  • Slows digestion and urinary functions
  • Activates sweat glands
