Parasympathetic Nervous System

Part of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) – controls involuntary responses during relaxed states.

Function: helps the body conserve and restore energy.

Effects on the body:

  • Decreases heart rate
  • Slows breathing and constricts airways
  • Stimulates digestion (gut movement, enzymes, saliva)
  • Constricts pupils
  • Stimulates bladder contraction for urination
