Hypothalamus

The hypothalamus is located directly above the brainstem, and is the control centre for many homeostatic mechanisms.

It acts as a link between the endocrine and nervous systems and continually monitors:

  • Temperature
  • Nutrient levels (like blood sugar)
  • Stress levels
  • Hydration

Its overall role is to initiate hormonal responses necessary to maintain homeostasis (keeping the body in a stable, balanced internal state).
