Compound (stratified) squamous epithelium

Multiple layers of cells, with flattened cells at the apical (free facing) surface. Provides durable protection. Found in areas subject to wear and tear e.g. epidermis of the skin (keratinised for waterproofing), and the lining of the mouth, oesophagus, vagina (non-keratinised).
