These three activities can be used to support your teaching of B1 The Cardiovascular System, specifically B1.1.1 Heart and Cardiac Cycle.

Blood Flow Through the Heart

In this activity, students will complete a diagram, as modelled by the teacher, to secure their knowledge and understanding of the flow of blood through the heart. A blank diagram is provided, which students can use to annotate and trace the flow of blood as it is modelled by the teacher. For the teacher, a script is included, plus a completed diagram. This resource also contains a set of multiple choice questions (and answers) to assess knowledge acquisition and understanding.

Cardiac Cycle

In this activity, students will complete a diagram, as modelled by the teacher, to secure their knowledge and understanding of the cardiac cycle. A blank diagram is provided, which students can use to annotate and write out the steps of the cardiac cycle, as it is modelled by the teacher. For the teacher, a script is included, plus a completed diagram. This resource also contains a consolidation activity where students fill in the gaps in three paragraphs which describe the three phases of the cardiac cycle.

Be the Heart

The objective of this activity is for students to develop a secure understanding of the cardiac cycle and blood flow by physically acting out the heart’s chambers, veins, arteries, and blood flow. This activity will make the mechanisms more memorable to improve recall in exam conditions. Detailed instructions are included.
