The complicated picture of obesity

The BBC report 'The Whale gives a voice to people like me' reminds us that obesity is a complex public health and personal health issue.

The report introduces us to Sean, who experienced rapid weight gain during lockdown after experiencing a bereavement. He says that the film The Whale, which follows the story of a man with morbid obesity is important because:

"I think people need to realise big people are human beings" and films such as this might "end the bias against those who live with obesity".

The article goes on to describe how Sean suffered a bereavement and redundancy in quick succession and during lockdown became quite isolated and neglected his health. He found the rapid weight gain, loneliness and loss of confidence became soul destroying. It was through a number of actions and support networks, both formal and informal that Sean has been able to regain control of his life and make positive steps to improving his health and wellbeing.
