September often marks a major transition for families as young people leave home for university or college. While an “empty nest” can bring greater freedom and new opportunities for parents and carers, research suggests that the experience can also have significant consequences for wellbeing.

The term “empty nest” was introduced in the early twentieth century, with “empty nest syndrome” later becoming associated with loneliness, depression and reduced self-confidence. However, the experience is not the same for everyone. Recent UK research suggests that factors such as relationship status, living arrangements and previous life experiences can influence how parents respond to their child leaving home.

For some, the transition creates opportunities to rediscover hobbies, friendships, travel or career ambitions. For others, particularly people who are single, widowed or living alone, it can increase loneliness and create a reduced sense of purpose. Parents may miss not only their children but also the routines, conversations and responsibilities that previously structured everyday life.

The research also highlights the importance of identity. People who have spent many years defining themselves primarily through parenting may struggle to adjust when their active parenting role changes. Unlike bereavement or retirement, there is also little social recognition of the emotional impact of a child leaving home.

Changing family structures, including increasing divorce among older adults and more people living alone, make this transition increasingly relevant. Understanding the empty nest as a life-course transition could therefore help health and social care professionals recognise and support those experiencing loneliness, isolation or loss of purpose.
