Rhys Hibbert, a 48-year-old father of two underwent pioneering surgery at University College London Hospital after a tumour began to affect his vision. This surgery was the world’s first live AI-assisted brain operation where Rhys had a pituitary tumour successfully removed.

Hibbert’s tumour was non-cancerous and measured 11mm. It was located on the pituitary gland, a small but important gland at the base of the brain that produces hormones involved in processes such as growth and metabolism. The tumour was close to the carotid arteries, which supply blood to the brain, and the optic nerves, which are essential for vision. As the tumour grew, Hibbert experienced fatigue, dizziness and a narrowing of his peripheral vision.

During the operation, surgeons used an experimental AI system that analysed live video footage in real time. The AI tracked surgical instruments and identified important structures, including hidden blood vessels and nerves. This helped surgeons identify safer areas in which to remove the tumour. However, the surgeons remained fully responsible for decisions and retained complete control throughout the procedure.

Researchers trained the AI using hundreds of videos of previous pituitary tumour operations. They hope that similar technology could eventually act as an additional source of expert advice during surgery.

The operation was successful, and Hibbert reported significant improvements in his vision and energy levels. The research team now plans to carry out a larger trial to investigate the technology further.
