World is split on how to tackle climate change

Joanne Parkinson

21st September 2020

27 Countries have been surveyed and 90% of people see climate change as being a serious problem. However, there is variation across countries with regards to the efforts residents believe their governments should make to tackle it.

The Covid-19 crisis has affected people's views, with many richer countries not believing that the climate change issue should be tackled as vigorously as the current pandemic. With a view firmly on the economic losses over the last 6 months, there appears to be less of a demand for action from the governments of the richer nations.

The responses regarding action are clearly down to experience, with 34% of people stating they had been affected by Covid-19 and only 13% affected by rising temperatures in the UK, for example.

The findings will be discussed, amongst other issues during Climate Week 2020 which is taking place in New York.
