Using AI in the A-Level Geography classroom

Over the last couple of years Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been knocking on the doors of our geography classrooms - and whilst some of us have happily let it in, others have been reluctant, treating it like an annoying cold caller, trying our best not to succumb. But love or loathe AI, it is here to stay and has had a huge impact on education.

So rather than dismissing it as a way that students can cheat, it's time to think really carefully about how AI can enhance your A-Level lessons - it can help students deepen their understanding of complex concepts, it cand help them to develop critical thinking skills, and it can help them prepare for exams with greater confidence.

Enhancing case study recall and application

One of the things that students find most tricky is mastering their case studies, whether it is remembering the specific details, or applying the content to a particular question context, this is something where they often lose marks.

AI-powered platforms can summarise content, generate questions, and help students make links across topics...

  • Generating summaries of case studies tailored to exam board requirements

  • Quizzing students with personalised, adaptive questions that reinforce knowledge of key facts and figures

  • Providing comparisons between case studies, encouraging students to make synoptic links across topics

Example 1:

Ask students to use an AI chatbot to generate a 'case study quiz' on the 2010 Haiti earthquake or the 2011 Tōhoku tsunami - each student within the class will generate a unique set of questions which ensures variety and means that they have to work on them independently, but it also means that students can swap questions to extend their work and reinforce their knowledge further.

Example 2:

For synoptic thinking (which many students struggle with), they can prompt AI to: 'Compare the social impacts of the Haiti earthquake with the Tōhoku earthquake'. Students then critique the AI’s response, adding missing details or correcting inaccuracies - so in this way they are not using AI to write a response instead of them doing it themselves, they are using it to create something that they can evaluate.

Developing analytical skills

One of the most challenging question types in the final exams is the analyse/interpret questions where students have to manipulate an unfamiliar data set, graph or map.

AI can support students to develop the skills required to master these questions by...

  • Offering practice questions where students interpret data sets, with instant feedback on their analysis

  • Creating visualisations of geographical data, helping students see patterns and trends more clearly (although these can be a bit hit and miss, so you may need to generate it several times to find something that you are happy with)

  • Suggesting alternative hypotheses or explanations that push students to think critically about geographical processes

Example:

Provide students with a rainfall and river discharge data set which they can ask AI to generate a graph and exam-style interpretation question. Students answer, then use AI for instant feedback (perhaps using Examiner AI!), and they can compare their response to a model answer. Doing this strengthens skills in describing patterns, recognising anomalies, and explaining processes.

Supporting extended writing

Another tricky area for students are the extended exam questions - particularly the 20-markers, although many students also struggle with the 9-markers. Ideally at A-Level students should be comfortable writing extended answers (as they are a core element of the qualification), but in reality we know this isn't always the case, especially when many sixth forms have low or non-existent entry requirements for the course.

To support extended writing, AI can...

  • Help students plan essay structures, breaking down introductions, main arguments, and evaluations
  • Suggest sentence starters or linking phrases to improve structure and coherence
  • Provide feedback on drafts, highlighting strengths and areas to improve, such as balance in argument or depth of evaluation

However, remind your students to use it for drafting and refining, not for writing! There is no point as AI obviously can't sit their exams for them and they need to practise the skills they need for those.

Example:

Students draft a 20-mark essay on 'With reference to one or more places you have studied, evaluate the impact of shifting flows of money and investment on their characteristics'.

Before writing their answer, they use AI to generate a skeleton essay plan, e.g. introduction, key arguments, evaluation - this will help structure their writing into a logical and coherent piece. Once they have written their 20-mark response they can paste their essay into Examiner AI) to see how well they fared, or they can use any other AI tool to request feedback on balance and evaluation.

Adaptive teaching

As stated above, ideally all students taking A-Level Geography should be able to cope with the demands of the course - but this is not the case and many students need extra support to become confident with the content, whilst others need stretching, particularly if they are hoping to pursue a related degree course.

AI can replace traditional time-consuming methods of differentiation, and helps to make learning personalised...

  • Struggling students can receive simplified explanations of complex theories

  • High-attaining students can be challenged with extension tasks, such as applying geographical models to unfamiliar contexts (which is always beneficial when it comes to dealing with novel situations in the final exams)

  • Tiered practice questions can be generated, ensuring all students are engaged at the right level (although when it gets closer to the exams you need to think carefully about how to ensure that all students have practised all question types)

Example:

When looking at the carbon cycle, weaker students could ask AI for a 'simplified explanation of the transfers within the slow carbon cycle', whereas those who need stretching could ask AI to 'explain the physical and human factors that lead to atmospheric carbon change' or to 'assess the relative importance of different carbon sinks within the carbon budget', or to 'summarise how feedbacks within and between the carbon and water cycles have links to climate change' - which would all encourage higher-level synoptic thinking.

AI can generate tiered practice questions (e.g. 4-mark, 9-mark, and 20-mark exam-style) on the same topic, so each student practises at the right level, moving up to the next tier of question when they feel confident enough.

Exploring the impact of AI across the globe

As well as helping to develop exam technique, AI also gives students an opportunity to discuss broader issues that connect directly to topics in the specification, which they can then bring into their exam answers, as up-to-date (and beyond the textbook) knowledge, such as...

  • The digital divide and unequal access to technology across the globe

  • The environmental impact of AI and data centres

  • The role of AI in geopolitics, urban planning, and climate modelling

Geography naturally lends itself to exploring the broader impacts of technology, and AI can act as a springboard for ethical and critical debates.

Example:

Students ask AI: 'How can artificial intelligence help tackle climate change?' They then evaluate the response, considering issues such as the carbon footprint of data centres, the digital divide, and the geopolitical risks of technology dependency.

This helps embed technological literacy while connecting directly to A-level key themes like sustainability, inequality, and globalisation.

Drawbacks of using AI in the classroom

While AI offers exciting opportunities, it’s important to be mindful of its limitations and risks...

Accuracy: AI-generated content can contain factual errors or oversimplifications, and sometimes is just completely wrong! Students must be encouraged to verify information against reliable sources.

Bias: AI reflects the data it was trained on, which may include cultural or regional biases. Teachers should prompt students to question assumptions.

Over-reliance: Students may be tempted to let AI do the thinking for them. Clear guidance should stress AI as a support tool, not a replacement for independent study. Reinforce the importance of critical thinking and independent judgement.

Assessment integrity: Remind students that AI should not be used to produce final essays or their NEA - only as a tool for planning, drafting, and revising, there is no point using it to cheat as they still have to sit their final exams independently!

Environmental impact: And of course, AI can contribute to environmental harm by consuming vast amounts of energy for training and running large models, which increases carbon emissions significantly - as geographers it would be remiss of us not to consider this, and this is something I am going to talk about further in a future blog post.
