Paris Climate Agreement's fifth anniversary
12th December 2020
As the landmark agreement reaches its fifth anniversary, evidence shows its targets are being met by over 50 cities globally.
From planting trees to revolutionising the transport infrastructure, 54 cities are on track in their efforts to maintain global heating to a 1.5 degree Celsius level.
The C40 Cities Network report states that the cities’ plans will prevent at least 1.9 gigatonnes of greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere between 2020 and 2030.
In Rio de Janeiro for example, they are using low carbon concrete in construction and doubling the vegetation cover in the city to act as a carbon sink. This is just one example of huge changes that are occurring in the cities to tackle the global warming issue.
