Geography in the News: Europe's warm summer shatters records
10th September 2022
This summer was the hottest on record in Europe, according to data from EU satellite monitoring.
Europe's previous high temperature record has been shattered by a series of heatwaves and a long running drought - making August the warmest in Europe by a significant margin. The summer was 0.4C warmer than the previous record, only set last year, but August was a whopping 0.8C warmer than the same month in 2018 (the previous August record). In Portugal temperature reached an astonishing 47C!
This was echoed in the UK when temperatures reached a new high of 40.3C, recorded in Coningsby in Lincolnshire on July 19, which was significantly higher than the previous record of 38.7C set in 2019.
Across the globe it was the 3rd warmest August ever recorded.
Europe also experienced the worst drought conditions in 500 years, however there were parts of Europe that experienced significant flooding, particularly in Scandinavia, where it has been wetter than average.
