An increase in China’s coal use threatens Paris targets
20th November 2019
As other nations have cut their coal use in the last eighteen months, China’s increased use, by reviving old power plants and creating new facilities is set to exceed the EUs total capacity.
Researchers - Global Energy Monitor say that from the start of 2018 to June 2019, countries outside of China cut their coal power by 8.1 gigawatts. In the same time period, China added 43GW, to their fuel output- enough to power approximately 31 million homes.
Researchers have stated that by 2030, China needs to reduce its coal power capacity by over 40% from current levels in order to enable the Paris target of 2 degrees Celsius to be adhered to.
