16 million people affected by seasonal floods in southern Asia

People affected in India, Bangladesh and Nepal.

Seasonal monsoon rains which occur annually are particularly severe this year and the risk of river flooding is likely to increase as rivers struggle to cope with the excess rainfall that this region is currently experiencing.

Further heavy rain is forecast over the next week and this is particularly concerning for Bangladesh as there are many swollen rivers in India which will ultimately travel through Bangladesh out to the Bay of Bengal.

Tens of thousands of people have been displaced across the region; putting aid agencies under pressure to provide shelter, food and clean water for already vulnerable communities.  Approximately 500 people have died since the floods started and this is likely to increase due to the risk of further flooding and the issues associated with water borne diseases and malnutrition linked to food insecurity.
