Tit-for-Tat Tariffs

Tit-for-Tat tariffs are a specific type of retaliatory trade policy where one country responds to another country’s tariffs by imposing similar tariffs of their own.

This is based on the game theory strategy of Tit-for-Tat, where a player chooses to respond to another player’s previous move with the same action. In terms of tariffs, it means that if one country imposes a tariff on another country’s goods, the second country may retaliate by imposing a similar tariff on the first country’s goods.

This type of tariff can escalate trade tensions between countries and can lead to a “tariff war,” where each country continues to retaliate against the other’s tariffs.

However, not all countries choose to engage in tit-for-tat tariffs. Some may choose to take a more conciliatory approach to trade negotiations, aiming to find a mutually beneficial solution.
