Status Race

Status races occur when individuals compete for relative social standing rather than absolute utility. Modeled as a Prisoner's Dilemma, consumers continuously escalate spending on visible and scarce markers, such as luxury brands or elite education, just to outdo their peers. Because status is a zero sum game, everyone expends valuable resources simply to maintain their current rank, creating societal waste.
