The Co-op activity explores consumer co-operative ownership, democratic decision-making, stakeholder impacts, profit distribution, and the benefits and drawbacks compared with public limited companies.

Students examine how the Co-op differs from a public limited company in its ownership, control, objectives and use of profit. They explain the meaning of “one member, one vote” and consider how members, employees, suppliers and local communities are affected by the way the business operates. The final task asks students to assess one benefit and one drawback for customers of shopping at a co-operative, including rewards, influence, community support, prices and product choice.
