Managing Capacity - A Novel Way to Increase Capacity

Try this simple exam-style question. "List three ways in which an operator of cruise ships could increase the capacity of the business."

Some possible responses might include:

Build additional ships (a long-term solution)

Hire spare ships from other cruise ship operators

Reduce the amount of time that cruise ships are out of action for repairs and maintenance

Reduce the size of the passenger rooms to increase the number of rooms

etc etc

However, if you were an examiner, would you give credit to the following response?

"Cut the ship in half and add an extra bit; then fit it back together and repaint to make the ship new".

Possibly not?
