Planned industrial action could disrupt bread deliveries across the West of England.

Lorry drivers who deliver bread for Hovis are planning to take strike action in a dispute over pay.

Around 60 drivers based at the Avonmouth depot near Bristol are members of the trade union Unite. They have rejected the 3% increase, arguing that this amounts to a real-terms pay cut, with inflation at 3.4%.

If the strike goes ahead, shops across the West of England could see a reduction in the supply of Hovis products on their shelves.

Hovis does not expect any serious shortages. The company says plans are in place to reduce the impact on its retail customers.

Unite claims that staff at Hovis's Belfast depot were offered better employee benefits than staff at Avonmouth, including a commission payment on every product sold and a higher rate of pay for working bank holidays.

The trade union believes Hovis can afford to treat all of its workforce equally, since the company is owned by a highly profitable parent business.

The dispute comes at a time when Hovis is working on a merger with fellow bread producer Allied Bakeries.

Both sides say they want to reach an agreement.
