Double-decker trains to be used in the Channel Tunnel as company increases the size of its fleet.

Eurostar has committed to purchasing thirty new trains from Alstom. This represents a significant investment in new technology, worth approximately £1.74 billion. This organic growth will expand the company's fleet size by roughly one-third.

The trains, known as Celestia models, will be double-decker vehicles. When coupled together in pairs, each service will accommodate around 1,080 passengers.

Industry experts suggest that operating trains with greater capacity could reduce ticket prices.

Currently, Eurostar transports 19.5 million passengers annually. The company's objective is to increase this figure to 30 million.

The business will spend £70 million upgrading Temple Mills depot in London, which is the only British facility capable of maintaining these larger continental-style trains.

Whilst Eurostar currently operates as the sole provider of cross-Channel rail services from London, several competitors are seeking to enter the market including Virgin, and a joint venture between Gemini Trains and Uber.
