Ryanair will no longer accept printed boarding passes.

The low-cost airline has introduced a new policy requiring all passengers to use electronic boarding passes. The change came into effect this week and represents a significant shift in check-in procedures.

Travellers must now complete online check-in before reaching the airport and display their boarding pass on a mobile device. Ryanair says around 90% of its 206 million annual customers already follow this process.

The company believes this modernisation will improve operational efficiency, reduce expenses for travellers, and benefit the environment by eliminating paper waste.

Passengers who fail to complete online check-in before arriving at the terminal will face charges of up to £55 for airport check-in services. However, customers who experience technical difficulties accessing their electronic boarding pass can obtain a replacement free of charge.

Research indicates that approximately 5% of the British population lacks internet access at home. Groups supporting older citizens have criticised the move, arguing that many elderly individuals do not own smartphones or find digital technology challenging to use.

Despite the digital transition, check-in facilities will remain available at airport terminals.
