Apple unveils its first foldable iPhone, priced from £1,999.

The iPhone Duo is the most expensive handset the company has ever sold. The launch marks Apple's first major redesign of the iPhone in almost twenty years.

The foldable phone market is already dominated by rivals such as Samsung and, in China, Huawei, with market share close to 80%.

Apple spent eight years developing the Duo and claims the device will still feel familiar to existing iPhone users. CEO John Ternus argues that Apple's approach to new product development sets it apart.

The premium price could make the Duo a niche, high-margin product similar to the Vision Pro headset.

Foldable phones currently make up only around 2% of global smartphone sales, but is expected to reach 4% within a decade. Switching from a traditional smartphone involves a learning curve for consumers.

Apple also launched the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max at lower price points. Their standard iPhone range typically provides more than half of total sales.

Apple additionally announced an expanded version of its voice assistant, Siri AI, which will draw on personal data stored on a user's phone to answer questions and carry out tasks automatically.
