Aldi has expanded its UK recruitment drive from an initially announced 1,500 jobs to roles across its business including new store openings this year. The German-owned discounter is now Britain's fourth-largest grocer after overtaking Morrisons last year.

The company is hiring store assistants, managers, and cleaners for new locations as well as distribution centre and office roles. With over 1,000 current stores and plans for 500 more, successful recruiting could take Aldi's workforce past 50,000.

Like rival Lidl, Aldi has grown rapidly through new stores since the financial crisis and capitalised on shoppers' value focus, exacerbated by the cost of living crisis. Grocery inflation shot up after Russia's invasion of Ukraine despite some costs falling.

Chains like Morrisons have launched price match initiatives against Aldi/Lidl to protect market share. But Aldi suggests its pay offer is better than industry norms, with wages above the National Living Wage and paid breaks.

Aldi's UK CEO said colleagues are a huge part of their success and they look forward to welcoming more across the country as they work towards making quality affordable food accessible to all.
