We are seeking an inspirational, well qualified and dynamic teacher of economics to join our highly effective department starting September 2022. The successful candidate must be able to teach economics up to and including Year 13, and business to GCSE. An ability to teach A Level business and a second subject to KS3, outside of the economics and business studies department, would be an advantage.
The economic studies department teaches A Level economics and business studies, and GCSE business studies. In the current academic year over 100 students are studying economics and almost 60 studying business at A Level, following the AQA specifications. Over 240 pupils are studying GCSE business studies, following the OCR specification. Academic results are very strong. Over the most recent 5 years of external examinations the pass rate at A Level has been 100% in both subjects, with 85% achieving grades A*-B in economics (of which 60% were at A*/A) and 60% achieving grades A*-B in business studies. Under the 9-1 GCSE in business, 78% of grades were 7 or above (including 64 results at 8/9) with 98% of all grades at 5 or above. In addition, last year was our most successful year for economics with 97% of grades at A*-B and 84% at A*/A.
There are currently six members of the department. We like to think of ourselves as having a distinctive departmental ethos, and alongside a commitment to academic excellence, we have an equal commitment to fun, warmth and liberality. As individual teachers we enjoy considerable independence of opinion and style but have long made a practice of innovation, sharing resources and seeking harmonization around firm templates of subject content. As such, life within the department is creative, co-operative and high-spirited.
In addition to classroom teaching the department has for many years run the LEAP scheme (similar to Young Enterprise), as well as numerous trips, competitions, visiting speakers, and attendance at conferences such as the IEA and IFS. In recent years there have been study trips to China and London as well as attendance at the prestigious Marshall Conference at Cambridge University. In addition, outside of the classroom there is a thriving Economics Society run by our student subject leaders.
We are seeking an enthusiastic classroom teacher who is committed to the teaching of economics and who is willing to develop present aspects of the curriculum aiming to further enhance the department’s standing. The successful candidate will also have strong classroom management skills and will be expected to play a full part in this busy department.
Colleagues have the opportunity to participate in the wide range of extra-curricular activities available within the school and to support the house system.
There are also a range of generous non contractual benefits available including salary sacrifice schemes and access to the school gym and pool.
